Elder Scrolls enthusiasts, especially those who fondly remember the older releases (like many of my colleagues), are buzzing with excitement over today’s streaming release and surprise launch of The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake. But there’s more news on the horizon for those looking ahead. Todd Howard took a moment during the event to remind us that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in the works, much to the relief of eager fans.
As he introduced the exciting new updates about the Oblivion Remaster, Howard casually mentioned, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.” This simple affirmation is the most significant update we’ve gotten about The Elder Scrolls 6 since March 2024, when Bethesda let slip that early versions of the game were being tested. They even hinted that these initial builds were quite entertaining, which is a promising sign.
Before that, we had to rely on less official updates. A former Skyrim designer noted back in October 2023 that we likely wouldn’t see more news until about six months before the game’s release. Prior to this, in September, Phil Spencer expressed confidence that The Elder Scrolls 6 would release within five years. Though it seemed amusingly optimistic back then, we’re almost halfway through that timeline without much new information.
It’s been a quiet few years from Bethesda when it comes to major updates. Back in August 2023, they finally announced that development had formally started—quite the wait since the original announcement at E3 years before. You might even wonder if they jumped the gun a bit on that announcement.
All jokes aside, it’s encouraging to get any kind of update on Elder Scrolls 6, however small. When they first announced it, I was still navigating my school days, and now I’m juggling adulthood with all its joyous responsibilities and the chaos of dating apps. Bethesda remains at the forefront of first-person RPG developers, and I have no doubt they’ll deliver something special. A little teaser or some concept art would go a long way, though. Honestly, even Liam Neeson in Taken had more convincing evidence his daughter was alive compared to our current clues about this game.
Feel free to share if these updates spark any feelings, or if you’ve calculated how much student debt I might accumulate before the game finally arrives!
