Wow, okay, so get this: late last year, there was this juicy whisper floating around about Apple maybe, possibly jumping into the VR controller game. But, here’s the kicker—they’d do it weirdly by buddying up with Sony to make those PSVR 2 Sense thingies work with their Vision Pro. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Apple and Sony, together, like, what? But 9to5Mac just dished that, hey, this thing’s still kinda happening. Maybe we’ll even hear about it next week? Could be!
So, the scoop is, visionOS might just open its arms—and whoa, who saw this coming—to PSVR 2’s Sense Controllers and, oh, throw in the PlayStation and Xbox pads for good measure. I mean, why not? Making nice with everyone, I guess. But, sigh, they’re playing coy about whether this jaw-dropper drops at the Worldwide Developers Conference or what. Apple’s all set to yak about updates to visionOS 26 anyway, which also means macOS and iOS are in for a name shake-up. How exciting, right? Maybe? I dunno.
Oh, there’s this image floating around too—Hideo Kojima, of all people, with, like, these Apple Vision Pro goggles on. Hideo Kojima! Anyway, Vision Pro burst out earlier this year (February 2024, to be specific) with a hefty $3,500 tag. Ouch. It’s been a bit of a head-scratcher for the VR folks cause it only deals with hand gestures and Bluetooth toys right now. So, devs are — dare I say — kinda caught in a bind: do they rework their old gems to fit this new toy or just… move on?
And before I forget, the whole point is, adding PSVR 2 controllers isn’t gonna suddenly make everyone rush out to grab these pricey headsets—Yeah, I said it. They’re really pitching the thing more as a “spatial computer” more than a gaming buddy. But hey, this might be their first step to welcome motion controllers, maybe in those smaller, less wallet-busting versions down the line? Fingers crossed.
Anyway—no, wait, bear with me—this whole thing sprouted from a Bloomberg tidbit by Mark Gurman. Apple knocked on Sony’s door earlier this year to talk controllers, despite saying earlier, “Nah, we’re not doing that.” Flip-floppers much?
So, yeah, Apple’s big shindig is kicking off on June 9th at 10 AM PT. I’ll be there watching. Maybe we’ll figure out what’s up. Or not. Who knows. Tag along on Apple’s YouTube Channel if you’re curious. Cool? Cool.
