Meta’s Beat Games just dropped a kinda surprising bombshell about Beat Saber today. Apparently, they’re saying goodbye to updates on PSVR and PSVR 2. Yep, no more jazzing things up with cooler features or tracks for PlayStation folks. Oh, and multiplayer? Yeah, that’s gonna bite the dust early next year too. Not sure why I’m not surprised, but hey, here we are.
So, I stumbled across an X post (still getting used to calling it that instead of its old name, you know?) and Beat Games is essentially waving at the future and dreaming big for Beat Saber. But for now, PS4 and PS5 are left hanging without any shiny new updates. But wait, that’s not all doom and gloom – you can still jam out with your old DLC music packs. Remember Lady Gaga’s ‘Abracadabra’? Yep, that was the last tune-drop for PlayStation users, like a farewell track or something.
And if you’re hooked on multiplayer, circle January 21st, 2026 on your calendar. That’s the day the party stops on PS4/PS5. Crazy, right? Multiplayer was kinda the big thing back in 2020 for PC VR and Quest users. Cross-play was the dream, but it never quite made it to PlayStation. Just one of those things, I guess.
Now, let’s not ignore the fact that Quest users are living the dream with ongoing updates and DLCs. Meta kind of nailed it with more than 10 million unit sales of Beat Saber just on Quest. Steam’s not left out either – they’re still getting all the good stuff in terms of music releases.
But here’s the kicker, Meta has been chummy with PSVR since 2018-ish. Pulling updates now just screams “we’re moving on.” It’s like a high school breakup or something. And Sony? Well, PSVR 2 came out in Feb 2023, looking all fresh, yet it seems like they forgot to throw a welcome party. Developers are kinda giving PSVR 2 a pass, I think because bigger platforms like Quest and SteamVR are just easier to rock with.
And while Sony is kinda doing its own thing with VR, they even made PSVR 2 all adaptable for PC VR games with this wired doodah you can buy. Who’d have thought? Makes me wonder if they’ll ever fully ditch that closed console vibe. Oh, and apparently, those PSVR 2 controllers might vibe with Apple’s Vision Pro too. Go figure.
