Red Bull, along with Jonathan Griffith Productions, has this new thing on Quest—”Touching the Sky.” Ever wanted to tag along with wingsuit jumpers zipping through the European Alps or a paragliding duo soaring over Pakistan’s Himalayas? Well, now you can—and it’s quite a ride.
So, they used these custom cameras—real high-tech 3D, 360-degree magic—and you’re right there with Fred Fugen and Vincent Cotte as they plunge through the Italian Dolomites. Fugen, on some Red Bull blog or other, was saying how tricky the whole filming gig was. Freefalling with a camera wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. He had to gel with the drone crew in the helicopter, and they didn’t even have much practice before jumping. Talk about a leap of faith—literally.
And then there’s Aaron Durogati with his buddy Matthias Weger, floating around the Pakistani Himalayas. Their goal? Ride those thermals right into the biggest mountains you can imagine. Durogati talked about the wild conditions there—mountains are massive, and if you think about it, getting into trouble means you’re pretty much on your own. The Alps are like, “Don’t worry, rescue’s on the way,” but out there, not so much.
Oh, right—it’s out for free on Meta Quest TV. But only if you’re rocking the Quest 2 or above. Classic, making me think about upgrading again.
Also, if you’re into the nitty-gritty of how they nailed these shots, Red Bull’s thrown up a 30-minute behind-the-scenes piece. Sounds like a lot of work, but worth a peek if you ask me.
