Alright, so I was diving into this whole thing about that new game, Ghost of Yōtei. Sucker Punch Productions gave us a sneak peek at it during Sony’s latest Yōtei-thon. Unveiled a bunch of stuff about Atsu’s arsenal and her trek across Ezo. It’s like being a future ghost with a stack of new modes to check out.
Remember Ghost of Tsushima? They had that rad Kurosawa Mode, tipping the hat to Akira Kurosawa, the samurai cinema genius behind epic flicks like Seven Samurai. Well, it’s back in Yōtei, jazzing things up with its black-and-white film grain vibe. Flip it into Japanese dialogue too. I might’ve gotten lost staring at the screen there, honestly.
Oh, but check this — they’ve added Takashi Miike Mode, which is kinda bonkers. Imagine the camera all up in your business, splattering more blood and mud around. If you’ve seen that 13 Assassins film, you know what’s up. And then there’s this Samurai Champloo twist, thanks to Shinichirō Watanabe, where they’ve thrown in some lo-fi beats. It’s like you’re fighting and chilling at the same time. Absolutely wild.
Anyway, this lengthy preview highlighted some new weapons, right? Dual katanas, ōdachi, and kusarigama — because why not? Atsu’s like, switching them mid-fight, disarming foes or getting caught off guard. The trailer was all about exploring, kinda like, “Hey, wander around and you might find something neat.” They even compared it to Elden Ring. So yeah, prepare to wander off the trail a bit.
Oh, and before I forget, they showed these limited-edition consoles and controllers. Fancy stuff with Mount Yōtei on the console plates and Atsu splashed over the controllers. It’s the sort of thing where you’re like, “Do I need it? Probably not. Do I want it? Yeah!”
Now, Ghost of Yōtei isn’t like a direct sequel or something. It’s more of a spiritual cousin, set 300 years after the whole Tsushima saga, and parked in Ezo, which we call Hokkaido now. Atsu’s mission? Avenging her family against the Yōtei Six. She’s taking them and a whole bunch of bounties down as she fully leans into the Ghost motif. What’s cool is you’ve got this narrative freedom — take on the Yōtei Six in any order. Choose your own adventure, right?
Anyway, that’s about what they dropped on us. Wild stuff, but I’m all for it.
